Baldwin County and Magnolia Springs Launch New Road Project
County and town split the $4.2 million cost for major road project

The Baldwin County Commission is teaming up with the Town of Magnolia Springs for a major roadway project aimed at improving traffic flow and pedestrian safety. This effort marks the third installment of the county’s 30 Cubed Program. The initiative focuses on working with local governments to improve transportation across Baldwin County. Officials say this project is a big step toward long-term traffic solutions for the growing region.
Announced July 1, 2025, the project will upgrade about 2,600 feet of County Road 49. Improvements will stretch from U.S. Route 98 to the Magnolia River. A newly signed Intergovernmental Roadway Construction Agreement between the county and the town outlines the scope of the work. Construction will include both roadway and pedestrian upgrades.
The project includes a continuous landscaped median that turns into designated lanes at intersections. These turn lanes are designed to keep traffic moving while slowing down overall vehicle speed. A wider, multi-use path will also replace the current sidewalk. This trail will be placed farther from traffic, offering a safer route for walkers and cyclists.
“This project has been on our Comprehensive Plan year after year,” said Mayor Ross Houser. “But we had no way to fund it until the County Commission came to us with this new program.”
Funding for the $4.2 million project will be split evenly between the town and Baldwin County. Each will contribute $2.1 million to cover all eligible costs. Those costs include land purchases, design, permitting, construction, and inspection services.
The 30 Cubed Program is part of Baldwin County’s push to build a safer, better-connected transportation network. It offers funding and planning support to cities and towns that join in improving traffic systems. As more people move to the area, county leaders believe this type of cooperation is key to keeping traffic under control.
