Spanish Fort Coach Killed in I-65 Traffic Crash

January 23, 2017

A flag at half-staff and a campus in mourning.

For Spanish Fort High School principal Brian Williamson a difficult day that began with a phone call giving him the news, he would have to share with his staff and Coach Akins team. “Definitely one of the tougher things I’ve ever done. You try to stay strong for everybody and be a leader in a situation like that and at the same time I’m hurting, broken on the inside as well.”

Partnership Between Baldwin County School System And Commission Strengthens

January 18, 2017

Baldwin County has one of the best school systems in Alabama. That’s one reason why families continue to move here and why the county commission continues to support the board of education.

Earlier this month, the commission agreed to permanently extend the one percent school sales tax that would have expired in 2018. The penny tax generates about 40 million a year for the school system and keeps more than 500 school employees on the payroll.

Baldwin County residents split on Commission’s decision to make – FOX10 News | WALA

January 17, 2017

On January 3, 2017, the Baldwin County Commission unanimously approved a permanent extension of a penny sales tax to help fund schools.  Since then, it’s taken some heat for not letting voters decide.

With a unanimous 4-0 vote, the Commission gave the School Board some relief…relief in the way of 40 million dollars in annual funding.  Baldwin County residents voted in the penny tax in 2010 and then renewed it in 2013 to help fund education.  That tax was set to expire again in May of 2018.  Commissioners said they made that decision now to keep the minds of our educators off of politics and on the students.

January 16, 2017

Failure to permanently extend a one-cent increase in Baldwin’s County sales tax would have “absolutely crippled” one of Alabama’s fastest-growing school systems, forcing it shutter campuses, lay off hundreds of workers and vastly increase classroom sizes.

Strength meets strength in Dollar General Bowl’s Ohio-Troy matchup | AL.com

December 22, 2016

Ohio coach Frank Solich said it’s not only Troy’s offensive line that has accounted for the nation’s lowest sack total – quarterback Brandon Silvers has something to do with it, too.

“Their quarterback is a very smart quarterback, excellent thrower, gets rid of the ball very quickly, identifies open guys quickly, gets the ball to them, is able to move around in the pocket, scramble, make some runs with his legs,” Solich said of the former Gulf Shores High School standout. “It’ll certainly be a situation where we’ll have to work for everything we get.”

Troy’s Brandon Silvers no longer under the radar as All-Sun Belt QB | AL.com

December 10, 2016

When Brandon Silvers played at Gulf Shores High School, espn.com deemed him “the most under-the-radar quarterback prospect in this class.” Silvers agrees with that assessment, and after what he’s done as Troy’s QB, perhaps he’s shown some collegiate coaches that they should have tried harder to get him.
