Expansion study underway as LuLu’s targets late July opening at airport

Gulf Shores International Airport

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — Gulf Shores International Airport is preparing for the future as it considers expanding its terminal and welcomes a new dining partner. The airport, located just three miles from the white sand beaches of Alabama, is already seeing growth since launching its first scheduled airline service. Officials say they want to stay ahead of passenger demand and offer more convenience for both residents and visitors. As part of this effort, the airport is working with experts to study possible improvements that could help the facility grow for years to come.

On July 10, 2025, the Airport Authority announced it had started looking at ways to expand the terminal. The expansion could include larger gate areas, more curbside space, and a bigger baggage claim. A final decision about construction and funding is expected later this fall. The airport began scheduled flights on May 21, 2025, with Allegiant offering nonstop service to eight cities, including Kansas City, Houston, and Cincinnati.

Vasey Aviation Group is helping the airport study design options for the terminal. The company played a key role in getting the current terminal ready for Allegiant’s launch earlier this year. Airport Director Jesse Fosnaugh said staying ahead of airline schedules is important because airlines plan their flights six to nine months in advance. He said the airport wants to make sure travel stays easy and affordable for everyone.

LuLu's Gulf Shores

In addition to possible expansion, the airport has approved LuLu’s as its first official food and beverage provider. LuLu’s is known for its coastal cuisine and family-friendly atmosphere. The restaurant will offer food, drinks, snacks, and souvenirs to travelers after they pass through security. LuLu’s plans a soft opening in late July, aiming to serve passengers during the busy summer season.

Lucy Buffett, owner of LuLu’s, said she is excited to be part of the airport project. She hopes travelers will enjoy a taste of Gulf Shores even as they leave the area. The new LuLu’s location will give passengers a chance to enjoy the restaurant’s unique hospitality and pick up a last-minute souvenir.

Gulf Shores International Airport sits on 838 acres and serves the communities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Along with commercial flights, the airport supports general aviation, military operations, flight instruction, medical transport, and law enforcement. Airport leaders say their goal is to support economic growth, tourism, and better connections for Coastal Alabama.
