February 23, 2014 - Orange Beach, AL (OBA) - Snowbird club updates from Ohio, Wisconsin and Iowa:

Due to icy weather, the Ohio Snowbird Club’s second meeting was canceled for Jan. 29, but the third was Feb. 5 at LuLu’s Homeport Marina with 95 people in attendance.

In the absence of President Bob Hofacker, Vice-President Sue Ellen Carpenter opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by Don Thrash giving the blessing and some of his jokes.(Pictured: visiting Rotarian Bill Wiesjohn of the Wisconsin Snowbird Club with trophy for having the most participants of all the Snowbird Clubs.)

Mona Barfield and her mother, Sandra Bishop of B&B Pecans were our guests. Mona spoke and showed a video about the growth of the pecan trees, the development of the nutlets, the harvesting of the trees by the tree shakers, how important it is to keep the leaves green, and explained how the top of the tree ripens first.

She also told of all the health benefits from pecans such as no cholesterol, no trans fats, more than 19 vitamins, a natural source of protein and increases fiber in your diet. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed hearing about pecans and why the trees look dead when the snowbirds arrive.

Dick Haberstroh and Georgene Carlton will co-chair Membership for 2015/2016. The treasurer and secretary positions still need to be filled.
