Sugarcane Jane: Dirt Road’s End – PopMatters

November 17, 2017

American music has taken on such a broad definition in recent years that it’s nearly impossible to define it within the context of any single form. Blues, folk, roots rock and country all figure in the mix, leaving the possibility open for all those so inclined to take on its trappings. However, should anyone need a benchmark, they’d be well advised to check out the duo that refers to itself as Sugarcane Jane, and whose fourth album, appropriately named Dirt Road’s End provides the perfect example of how to incorporate all the necessary trappings. Anthony and Savana Lee Crawford, the husband-wife pair that operate under the aegis of Sugarcane Jane, describe their sound as “organic music at its finest”, and given its down home, back porch embrace, it has to be said that the label they’ve pinned is apt indeed.

Flippers Restaurant at Bear Point

Flippers’ Chef Mike Myers loves football season. And when it comes to the tourist season, he’ll break out the football analogy.

“You go through training camp with spring break, but once game time’s here, it’s on,” he said. “Every night is Friday night. From Monday through Sunday. It’s a battle to execute the way you’re supposed to do, then turn around and do it all over again on six and a half hours sleep.”

Ramblin’ woman: Lynn Oldshue is a storyteller on a mission in Mobile | AL.com

October 17, 2017

For years, Lynn Oldshue pined for Mobile. After living here for a brief stint living there after college, she moved with her meteorologist husband, John Oldshue, to Birmingham, where he took a job at ABC 33/40. Even as their two sons were born, and as she worked in marketing at the Birmingham Zoo and Alabama Theater, she was scheming a way to get back to the place she considered home.

A big U.S. beach festival is making its way to Australia next year

September 13, 2017

The two-stage, 35,000 capacity festival would run for two days in December 2018, and the proposal already has the backing of Gold Coast Tourism and the Live Music Taskforce. If it goes ahead, it’s believed it would bring tens of millions of tourist dollars flooding back to an area that has suffered from the loss of big-name festivals like Big Day Out in recent years.

The U.S. version of the festival has been operating for nine years on the Gulf Shores of Alabama, and has boasted names like Kings of Leon, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters over the years, with this year’s lineup boasting Mumford & Sons, Twenty One Pilots and Chance The Rapper.

“God Bless America Music Lovers Appreciation Jam” raises funds for music education

August 08, 2017

There’s a nice Eastman guitar on a stand at Suzi and George VanDyke’s Scenic Hills home. Neither of the VanDykes plays guitar, but they have plenty of friends who stop by who do.

The couple will have more guitar-slinging friends over than usual on Sept. 9. That’s when the VanDykes will host the fourth annual “God Bless America Music Lovers Appreciation Jam” in their backyard. Dozens of musicians normally show up for the casual hootenanny, which raises money for musical education. Last year’s backyard concert attracted nearly 300 people and raised $1,000, which the couple gave to the Blues Angel Music Foundation, which supports numerous music programs in Northwest Florida.

Fans tailgate outside Kenny Chesney concert in Orange Beach | AL.com

August 06, 2017

Saturday began as a drencher.

The Alabama Gulf Coast got hammered with an August rain storm that dumped about an inch of rain before noon. For those who held tickets to the Kenny Chesney concert on Saturday night at The Amphitheater in Orange Beach likely felt like there would be no show at the outdoor venue, but by late afternoon the rain had let up and the sun steamed up the day.

Moon: Frank Brown Foundation For Music is serious about music education

June 27, 2017

Part of the dream is to someday show my songs at the Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival some November.

That’s why I picked up the guitar in my 50s — to showcase the simple songs sprouting in my head. We’ve got a little group going. We’ve even got a band name — the Ian Fuller Experience — and a first album title, “Halfway to Greatness.” I have a few totally inappropriate and scandalous songs ready — “Waxing Trauma,” “Death Ray” and “Family Tree” — as well as my work-in-progress song-cycle about young love in North Korea, featuring future favorites such as “My Juche Girl” and ”State Approved Haircut No. 7 (You Look So Fine With).”

Karen Waldrup Returns to the Gulf Coast, with Millions of new Fans

June 14, 2017

Singer/Songwriter/Performer Karen Waldrup from New Orleans is currently living in Nashville Tennessee pursuing her music career. Karen has been performing gulf coast tours, including the Flora-Bama, with her band for the last 7 years.

Karen Waldrup

Karen says in her bio that the artists who have influenced her music include Alanis Morissette, Ingrid Michaelson, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, Otis Redding and Janis Joplin. I detetected a hint of a young Dolly Parton, with an (from her website) “in-your-face” style of country music. She’s across the USA and Europe… her stage presence mesmerizes her audiences; often receiving standing ovations.

One of the pioneers of southern rock and one of the greatest blues singers ever, one of the founding member of the Allman Brothers Band will always be remembered for the influence he’s had on popular music. And that influence could definitely be felt Saturday at the Wharf Amphitheater in Orange Beach when The Charlie Daniels Band and Alabama played an almost-sold out show under the stars.

Charlie Daniels reflects on career before Orange Beach show wth Alabma | The Sun Herald

May 27, 2017

There’s no slowing down for Charlie Daniels, who turned 80 in 2016. Sure, he’ll tell you he’s only “playing about 100 shows” this year as opposed to 200, but he also released a new album last year and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He also works tirelessly for veterans’ groups and their families. And he’s just published his first book, “Never Look at the Empty Seats.”

May 26, 2017

Southern rock’s identity is finally opening up.

What once felt like a genre too timid to fall into infatuations with electronic and synthetic elements, is now a flirtatious little something, ready to tease just about whoever comes near. The result is an enchanting and intoxicating new beat that feels well-traveled, experienced and mature.
