Fairhope moving forward with $1 million pedestrian safety improvement project | WPMI April 25, 2019

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WPMI) — Major traffic safety enhancements are in the works for Fairhope, one of the fastest growing cities in Alabama.

The city of Fairhope will soon begin construction on a planned safety improvement project, which includes lighted paths, pedestrian crosswalks, and more.

Recycling woes: Local governments struggle with collapsed market | fox10tv.com April 25, 2019

For cities like Daphne on the Eastern Shore, the depressed market has caused budgetary heartache. A couple years ago, the city was defraying part of the cost of garbage and recycling collection by selling material to the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority in Florida’s Escambia County. But during the last six months, Daphne actually has had to pay ECUA $2 a ton to take the items.

Alabama Senate debates giving local tax dollars to charter schools – al.com April 25, 2019

The Alabama Senate today debated a bill that would allow local tax dollars to be diverted from established public school systems and follow the students to new charter schools.

Charter schools, which are also public but function as a freestanding school district, receive state and federal money. Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh, R-Anniston, sponsored Senate Bill 311, which calls for any local tax dollars not allocated for capital expenses, debt service or transportation to follow a student to a charter school.

Alabama House committee approves bill to hold back third-graders who don’t read on grade level – al.com April 25, 2019

An Alabama House committee today unanimously approved a bill that will require third-graders not reading on grade level by the 2021-22 school year to be retained in the third grade. The bill also calls for a renewed focus on early learning, in grades K-3 and requires schools to provide more support for struggling readers.

Daphne woman arrested for stealing money from her Mardi Gras organization April 25, 2019


DAPHNE, Ala. (WKRG) — A woman in charge of managing money for her Mardi Gras association has been arrested for stealing funds from the society.

Tara Strada was arrested and booked into the Baldwin County Jail Tuesday. The sheriff’s office says she was formerly the treasurer for Apollo’s Mystic Ladies, a group based in Daphne. She served as treasurer until the group started noticing “discrepancies” a few months ago, and they removed her from the post, according to investigators with the sheriff’s office.

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) – The Alabama Senate Judiciary committee approved a bill allowing people with certain conditions to use medical cannabis, also known as medical marijuana. It passed 6-2 with three lawmakers abstaining.

Summerdale couple sentenced for torturing, abusing children April 24, 2019

Summerdale, Ala —- A Baldwin County judge has sentenced a Summerdale couple to decades behind bars for the torture and abuse of three children.

In September of 2016, a 15-year-old boy weighing just 75 pounds, was found beaten, starved and kept in a closet.

Daphne police catch three thieves in the act April 24, 2019


DAPHNE, Ala. (WKRG) — Three people have been arrested after a Daphne police officer caught them entering a parked car inside a subdivision. Police say they had stolen guns and other property. According to the Daphne Police Department, an officer found a suspicious car in the Old Field neighborhood Wednesday morning around 2 a.m. Investigators say the three suspects traveled to the subdivision in a stolen car. The car was stolen from the same area a few days ago. Stolen property was recovered from inside the car, including two stolen guns and electronics.

Tonight will be dry and mild with lows in the 60s.

Tomorrow brings our next risk of showers and thunderstorms, after midday. A Marginal risk for severe weather exists across almost all of the News 5 area for Thursday. This means there is a very small possibility that a storm could become severe.

Saraland Police chase ends in wreck in Baldwin County | WPMI April 24, 2019

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) — It was a close call for an innocent driver after a Saraland Police chase.

The chase started in Saraland on 1-65 when police say the suspect, Byron Reed, Jr., drove recklessly and wouldn’t pull over for an officer. It ended in north Baldwin County where police say Reed took exit 45, hit an innocent driver, then continued down the on-ramp and crashed into the woods.

Fairhope Beach Park reopens for season this weekend | WPMI April 24, 2019

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WPMI) — The city of Fairhope announced on their Facebook page that the Fairhope Beach Park will reopen for the season on Saturday, April 27.

The cost for non-residents will be $20 per car per day and $5 per walk-in per day.

New information about wrong-way driver in deadly I-10 crash | WPMI April 24, 2019

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) — New information has been released about the wrong way driver on I-10 who caused a fiery crash killing five people after a police chase earlier this month.

We now know that driver 26-year-old Dominic Garcia, Junior, out of San Antonio, Texas, had previously run from the law there.

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) — Every patrol unit in the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office will soon be outfitted with a device that could save your life.

During a training session Tuesday, deputies learned about the new AEDs, or Automated External Defibrillators, they’ll be carrying in their cars. These state-of-the-art units have four-year batteries, are fully automated, offer bilingual instructions and deliver a hands-free charge.

Robertsdale woman shot during robbery faces long recovery | fox10tv.com April 24, 2019

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) — A Baldwin County woman who deputies say was shot by her nephew during a robbery remains in the hospital.

Family members say Leigh Ann Thomas underwent a lengthy surgery on Monday to remove bullet fragments and will have another surgery on Wednesday.
