Fox10 News is committed to Baldwin County. Three cities in the Eastern Shore area are in the national spotlight for job growth.

According to a recent article in USA Today, Daphne, Fairhope, and Foley rank 7th for areas that added the most jobs in 2017. Forbes magazine also named Daphne one of the top 50 cities to grow a business.

Former Mobile County constable found guilty of murder in Spanish Fort | AL.com

A former elected officer of the law will now be awaiting sentencing in Baldwin County after being found guilty of murder Friday morning.

In a release from the Baldwin County government offices, officials confirm a jury found Larry Lambert Sheffield, a former Mobile County Precinct 24 Constable, guilty of murdering Jeffrey Carter McMillan.

Alicia Smith recently found herself alone inside one of the two brand-new cabins she designed at Historic Blakeley State Park for the first time since they were finished. She climbed the stairs to the loft area and lay down on a cot, staring up at the Eastern white pine on the vaulted ceiling above her. Smiling, she pulled out her phone and took a picture, thinking, “Someone’s going to be so happy lying here.”

Deputies: foul play suspected in disappearance of Baldwin County man | AL.com

Baldwin County Sheriff’s deputies are requesting the assistance of the community in finding answers for a local family looking for a missing man.

Deputies are asking anyone with information regarding the disappearance of 40-year-old Kyle Aden Levins to contact authorities. According to a release issued by Lieutenant Andre Reid, investigators are regarding Levins’ case as “suspicious”.

Caught in the Act – Golf ball machine theft – FOX10 News | WALA

Orange Beach Police have arrested two Spanish Fort women after receiving several calls identifying them as theft suspects.  The women are accused of breaking into two ball dispensing machines at a local golf course.  Police said the women gave them the best evidence they could have hoped for after looking straight into a security camera before trying to disguise themselves.

Unexplained boom heard along Alabama coast | AL.com

Unexplained booms aren’t limited to central and north Alabama: Residents along the Alabama Gulf Coast reported hearing one Thursday morning, with some saying it was strong enough to make their Christmas ornaments sway.

At about 9:15 a.m. a post on an Orange Beach community Facebook page, the OBA Community Website, mentioned a “strong rumble of the earth” and asked who else had heard or felt it. Dozens of replies poured in from Gulf Shores, Ono Island, Perdido Key, Elberta, the Fort Morgan peninsula, and as far north as Fairhope and Foley.

Some compared it to thunder, while others said it had rattled their windows or even “sounded like something blew up and landed on my house.”

Baldwin to Prichard Police Chase ends with crash and one arrest | WKRG

A Foley man is in custody after a police chase from Baldwin County to Prichard.

The wild ride started near Baldwin County Road 54 and County Road 64 in the Belforest community.  Baldwin County sheriff’s deputies were attempting to stop a vehicle driven by Joel James of Foley.

Officers pursued James through Lake Forest, then to the Bayway and into Prichard.  James was arrested after blowing through a stop sign and hitting an Alabama State Trooper who had joined the pursuit.

Foul Play Suspected in ‘Suspicious’ Disappearance of Baldwin County Man | WKRG

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office needs the public’s help to solve the “suspicious” disappearance of man in early May or June of 2017.

40-year-old Kyle Aden Levins was last seen in the Elsanor area of Baldwin County.

Back in October, police were searching for Levins in connection to an ongoing narcotics investigation near Greek Cemetery Road at Whispering Pines Road.

Man who allegedly rammed Summerdale police cruiser arrested in J – FOX10 News | WALA

An Ashland man who was wanted on several outstanding warrants was arrested Tuesday evening in Jefferson County.

The man — 47-year-old Anthony Scott Marler — also happens to be the suspect wanted by authorities in Baldwin County. They say Marler rammed a police cruiser with a stolen pickup truck he was driving.

Championships call Baldwin County home – Lagniappe Mobile

Soccer is making a big splash on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Since 2003, the Southeastern Conference has hosted its women’s championship at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.

Just up State Highway 59, officials with the Foley Sports Tourism Complex are also getting a piece of the action. For the second year in a row, they hosted the Sun Belt Conference women’s championship.

Baldwin County voters have passed a one mill property tax renewal Tuesday, December, 12, 2017.  The “Yes” vote ensures that Baldwin County schools will continue to receive $4.5 million dollars in funding annually.

While it may not have been the tax renewal on the ballot that drove Baldwin County voters to the polls in record numbers, the majority who went sent a strong message.  The renewal passed handily, allowing Baldwin County school leaders to breathe a sigh of relief.

Body Discovered in Perdido May Solve Car Crash Mystery | WKRG

PERDIDO, Ala. (WKRG) – Alabama State Troopers and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the discovery of a woman’s body in the Perdido area Wednesday morning.

According to the sheriff’s office, troopers responded to the report of an accident on Lottie Road Tuesday evening around 5:30 p.m.  When they arrived they discovered a vehicle that had been in an accident, but there was no driver present.

Baldwin Superintendent Thanks Community for Yes Vote | WKRG

Voters overwhelmingly renew a property tax to help fund schools in Baldwin County.  In the carline at Bay Minette Elementary School this morning, you’d be hard-pressed to find a parent who didn’t vote yes on the one mill Tuesday.

“I’m a teacher as well as a mother and it’s important we do have that vote,” said April after dropping a child off.  It’s a sentiment echoed in other cars.

Orange Beach applies for RESTORE funding for Wildlife Center

The city is taking aim at RESTORE Act money with an eye on funding five projects in Orange Beach including expansion and relocation of the Wildlife Center.

Applications for the current round of projects will go to the Natural Resource Damage Assessment arm of NOAA, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and RESTORE funds. These will be the preliminary application, Coastal Resources Director Phillip West said.

Big Beach Brewing Co. is the southernmost brewery in Alabama, located in the heart of Gulf Shores. Owners Jim and Julie Shamburger began brewing as a hobby. “We brewed what we liked, and we liked it too much. It only seemed right to share,” Jim Shamburger said of the humble beginnings of the brewery. Their 10-barrel brewing system is exclusively dedicated to brewing, serving all kinds of ales from IPAs and Stouts to Cream Ales and Belgian-style beers.

Baldwin County votes to renew 1 mill school tax – Lagniappe Mobile

Baldwin County voted to renew a controversial 1-mill tax to keep school funding at 12 mills of property taxes to fund the county system. Gulf Shores’ new school system will receive a per-student portion of this tax as well.

“This vote was about our efforts to restore confidence and this vote shows great confidence in Baldwin County Public Schools,” Superintendent Eddie Tyler said. “That is a direct result of our teachers and employees who showed over the past few years how committed we are to making Baldwin better, even through tough times. I am so proud of them.”

One Mil tax on Baldwin ballot | WPMI

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) — As part of tomorrow’s special senate election, Baldwin County voters are being asked to vote “yes or no” to renewing a one mil property tax.

On the day before the election some argue this is not a renewal. The school systems stands to lose more than $4 million if the tax is not renewed by voters. Those who oppose the tax are calling it a new tax.

Issues between school leadership and the board of trustees for the endowment that helps fund the school are at the center of a dispute, which includes questions about alleged misuse of funds.

On Wednesday, Dec. 13, the board of trustees for the endowment will meet to discuss whether funds will be dispersed to the school.

New Cabins Come to Historical Blakeley Park | WKRG

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — In just a few short weeks, you could spend the night right in the heart of nature at a popular local state park.

Located in a secluded part of the Historic Blakeley State Park, the “Peters” and “Sibley” cabins were unveiled to the public on Monday.

They will be available for nightly rentals starting December 29th.

Orange Beach awarded grant for new Backcountry Trail loop at Sportsplex | Orange Beach

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs awarded the City of Orange Beach a $116,532 grant to construct a new trail at the Sportsplex, and the Orange Beach City Council on Dec. 5 approved matching funds of $41,293 for the project.

The new Interpretive Loop will go around an existing city-owned lake and natural area, connecting the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail to the Orange Beach Sportsplex.

“We’re very excited about the improvement to the Backcountry Trail this new alignment will permit,” said Phillip West, Orange Beach Coastal Resources Manager. “It’s roughly a 0.7-mile alignment, but it accesses the lake and creates a 1-mile loop from the Sportsplex.

Orange Beach considers microeffeciency apartments | The Islander

An apartment community planned unit development (PUD) divided Orange Beach’s City Council at its first December meeting.

The developer seeks to build micro efficiency apartments east of the Baldwin EMC building on the beach express. The location is University Lane and Roscoe Road. The planning commission had previously shot this down unanimously citing insufficient parking for the proposed 216 units planned.

Baldwin Voters Will Also Vote on Property Tax Renewal Tuesday | WKRG

(WKRG) — When voters head to the polls in Baldwin County they will once again have the chance to vote on funding for the Baldwin County School System. “We’re not asking for anything new, this one mill has been on the books since Moby Dick was a minnow.”

The one mill property tax renewal would provide about four and a half million dollars. “It’s not salaries, it’s not in our construction program. This is to continue the normal day to day operational expenses that it takes to run the third largest system in the state of Alabama,” says superintendent Eddie Tyler.

World Food Championships Bring Food Fight to Orange Beach | Edible Lower Alabama

Last month, things really heated up in Orange Beach. The World Food Championships, the biggest food competition on earth, brought 1,200 cooking contestants to the Gulf for a chance to win hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and prizes. And teams from Lower Alabama represented the region admirably, placing as high as second in the competition categories.

Pedestrian in critical condition after being hit on Gulf Beach Highway

A pedestrian is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle while crossing State Road 292, according to a Florida Highway Patrol press release.

The pedestrian, who has yet to be identified, and a witness were walking westbound on SR 292 on the north shoulder of the roadway. Kathy Erwin, 59, was traveling westbound on SR 292 in a 2002 PT Cruiser.

Waterfowl Stamp Art Call for Entries | Outdoor Alabama

Alabama artists are invited to enter the 2018 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp art contest, which opens December 11, 2017. The winning artwork will be featured as the design of the 2019-20 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp. The Alabama stamp is required for all licensed hunters when hunting migratory waterfowl in the state. Revenue from the sale of the stamp is used to purchase, establish or improve migratory waterfowl habitat.

In Mobile, Mobile Police reporting no accidents. Highway Patrol on the scene of a car vs. deer there Dawes at Grand Bay Wilmer Road. No problems right now through Baldwin County except for some foggy conditions there around the Gulf Shores Orange Beach area. On the Panhandle we’re accident-free.

Driver narrowly escapes as big rig crushes pickup on icy Bayway – FOX10 News | WALA

Montay Bishop’s usual drive to work took a different turn before sunrise Saturday morning.

In fact, he’s lucky to be alive.

“I didn’t have no control of it,” Bishop told FOX10 News after the accident on the Interstate 10 Bayway. “It just started sliding.”

A mixture of snow and ice caused Bishop to lose control of his Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck on the Bayway.
