November 23, 2017 – Orange Beach, AL (OBA) – Traveling around the country plying his trade as a salesman, Bob Dames was always on the lookout for a place with a great burger and craft beer combination.
“And he could never find both,” Operations Manager Melissa Sullivan said. “He woke up one day and decided, ‘I wanna do that’ and put together FlipDaddy’s.”
Dames discovered Orange Beach when he came to stay in a friend’s condo and decided he wanted to bring a FlipDaddy’s to the beach resort town.
“He saw the area and loved it down here,” Sullivan said. “He thought it would be a good area for us to bring in a really good burger.”
The chain’s fifth location opened on beach road this summer in Orange Beach with a little bit different concept than some of the previous stores. FlipDaddy’s also has two restaurants in Ohio and two in Kentucky.
Sullivan says they wanted to concentrate on getting the food out in a timely manner for on-the-go vacationers.
“This is our first fast, casual, hybrid and we want our guests to still get that guest experience,” Sullivan said. “It’s very important to us. But at the same time, they can get in and out faster at their pace. That’s big right now. Everyone wants to get in and out pretty quick. We felt like it would be a good mixture for that.”
FlipDaddy’s also offers full service in the bar area of the restaurant.
“You can go through the line and place your order and pick up your drinks and everything and we’ll bring your food out to you,” she said. “But if you want that full service, the bar does all of that for you and still get that one-on-one interaction with the bartender.”
With alacrity in mind, FlipDaddy’s simplified the offerings for the Orange Beach location.
“It’s smaller than our normal menu,” Sullivan said. “We have nine gourmet burgers, four salads and four appetizers. We didn’t want a menu that was too big for people to have to go through.”
But also expect quality when you place your burger order at FlipDaddy’s.
“Our burgers are never frozen,” Sullivan said. “They are always fresh. Our blend is short-rib brisket and ground chuck so it’s not your normal real greasy burger. It’s a little more lean but it is fantastic. It’s high-quality meat.”
Topping one of those nine burgers is FlipDaddy’s signature grilled mac and cheese. It’s also the restaurant’s most popular side.
“Our most popular burger would be our whiskey bacon burger or our MacDaddy,” Sullivan said. “It has grilled mac and cheese and bacon inside the mac and cheese on a pretzel bun. One of our most popular sides is grilled mac and cheese as well.
“It’s all homemade. We put butter on the grill and we put shredded cheddar on it, put mac and cheese on it, put more cheddar on top, melt it all together and flip it. It gets a nice crisp on the edge.”
Among the burgers are the Rise and Shine with a fried egg, bacon, lettuce and tomato. Or try the Chuck Norris with house-made spicy sauce, fire-roasted green chile and jalapeno compote, lettuce and Pepper Jack cheese.
The Whiskey Bacon is topped with a sweet and tangy whiskey reduction sauce, American cheese, smoked bacon and crispy bacon bits. Also available are a turkey burger with roasted red peppers, provolone and remoulade or a deep-fried chicken burger with hot sauce spicy bacon and Monterrey Jack cheese.
Appetizers include some traditional favorites, fried pickles, Buffalo chicken dip, wings or Braxton Brewery beer cheese. It’s made with beer brewed exclusively for FlipDaddy’s at the Covington, Ky., brewery.
“We are the only place in Alabama that carries Braxton Brewery’s beer,” Sullivan said.
Speaking of beers, you can taste a variety of 20 craft beers on tap at FlipDaddy’s. There is also a full bar available with a variety of frozen drinks including the local favorite, bushwackers.
“They are new to us because we aren’t from Alabama,” Sullivan said. “We made sure we had it on our menu.”
Salad varieties include fried chicken tenders with your choice of dressing, Thai-grilled chicken with poppy seed dressing and Santa Fe Chicken salad with blackened chicken and chipotle ranch dressing.
For dessert, belly up to the milkshake bar, a popular spot for the children in your party. Try the frappes, shakes, smoothies or chose from one of three lemonades.
Besides bringing gourmet burgers and craft beers to Orange Beach, FlipDaddy’s also wants to be involved in the community, part of Dames’ dream when he started the chain, Sullivan said.
“He’s one of the best people I’ve ever met in my life,” she said. “He has so much passion for FlipDaddy’s and his employees. He’s really big about the community and supporting the community as well.”
To that end, FlipDaddy’s is planning several events during November including a Stick a Fork in Cancer Relay for Life Fundraiser. Nov. 22-26.
To help out the Gulf Shores soccer team, FlipDaddy’s is asking for the community and businesses to donate decorated artificial Christmas trees for a silent auction on Nov. 30, which is also GSHS Soccer Spirit Day at the restaurant.
Get a burger and bring your camera for pictures with Santa on Nov. 24 from 5-7 p.m. or Nov. 25 from 1-3 p.m.
