Velcro Pygmies at Shrimp Fest in Gulf Shores
February 11, 2019 - Gulf Shores, AL - (OBA®) - The Annual National Shrimp Festival has recently begun accepting applications to take part in the 48th edition of the festival happening October 10th through 13th in Gulf Shores.

The festival draws an average of 250,000 people during a four day period and has been a tradition in the area since 1971. Merchandise, food, activities, and musical acts from all different genres are just a few things that fill the action packed weekend.
The work in prepping for the festival is tough, but very rewarding to those involved.

"It's a year-round operation," said Suzetta Mimms, VP of Special Events and Festivals for the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber, "From the moment one festival ends, we're already working hard to ensure we put out a great event for the next year."

While the year has just begun, those interested in participating in the festival now have the opportunity to send in their applications. This includes merchandise vendors, food vendors, fine arts vendors, and entertainment acts. The vendor application deadline is April 15th, and entertainment acts have until February 28th to send in their electronic press kits.

The call has also been put out to area restaurants to enter the 12th Annual National Shrimp Festival Restaurant Challenge happening at Gulf Coast Culinary Institute at Coastal Alabama Community College. Those who can come up with the best dishes featuring the main ingredient of domestic shrimp have the chance to win cash prizes, cookware, and recognition at the festival. Restaurants have until February 13th to get their applications in.

The festival is also in the midst of running their poster design contest where artists can show off their skills by taking all elements of the festival and putting them into a poster design. The winning design will become the official poster for this year's festival and the winner will receive a cash prize and be featured in an autograph signing during the festival to sign the poster for attendees. Designs must be submitted by March 1st.

All applications can be found by visiting the main hub for the festival, myshrimpfest.com.
