Orange Beach Continuing Excellence Program

January 18, 2020 - Orange Beach, AL - (OBA®) - The City of Orange Beach Continuing Excellence Program is offering free workshops through March. The classes are open to adults of all ages and are held at the Orange Beach Recreation Center in Portable Classroom No. 1.

The schedule is as follows:

  • January 22nd - “Photo Boot Camp: Photography with Your Smartphone” from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, January 22nd. Class participants will learn the tips and tricks from National Geographic photographers.  Click here to register online for the Photo Boot Camp.   
  • January 27th - “iNaturalist: Let's put Orange Beach on the Map” from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, January 27th. Class participants will explore the area's flora and fauna with a group of fellow nature enthusiasts.   • February 10th - “Micro-photography Boot Camp: Get Up Close & Personal” from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday, February 10th. Class participants will use their Smartphones to capture tiny subjects in a big way.  The class is open to adults of all ages.   • March 7th - “BioBlitz: Explore the Natural Wonders of Orange Beach” on Saturday, March 7th at the Orange Beach Recreation Center in Portable Classroom No. 1 in the morning and then at the Orange Beach Sportsplex in the afternoon. An iNaturalist workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Rec Center. From 1 to 3 p.m. the class will shift to Pitcher Plant Bog photography and data collection at the Sportsplex Trail.  The public may register for one or both of these free workshops. This workshop is open to all ages. Attendees will download the iNaturalist app, walk with City staff around the pitcher plant bog, then snap photos of plants, insects and animals. The app will track the location of each photo and share information with researchers to help identify the flora and fauna, as well as provide data for a variety of research projects. Click here to register online for the BioBlitz. 
  • March 9th - “Intro to Genealogy” from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, March 9th. Participants will dig into their family history with this hands-on workshop. The class is open to adults of all ages. Snowbirds are welcome.  Click here to register online for the Intro to Genealogy workshop.
  • Weekly creative writing workshop - 1-2 p.m. each Tuesday from through May 19th (No class Feb. 25 & April 7) at the Orange Beach Recreation Center in Portable Classroom No. 2. Instructor Sara Carroll will cultivate a positive and creative outlet for expression through the pen. The workshops will explore various writing pieces for discussion and prompting, and participants will share their own works in order to both challenge and encourage one another.
