Alabama State Waters to Reopen for Shrimping in June

Marine Resources Division Shares Details for Shrimpers

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Alabama shrimpers will soon be able to start harvesting shrimp in state waters. The Marine Resources Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) announced the opening. Shrimping will begin at 6 a.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2025. All inside waters not permanently closed by law or regulation will be open for shrimp harvesting.

The open areas include Mobile Bay, Bon Secour Bay, Mississippi Sound, Perdido Bay, Arnica Bay, Wolf Bay, and Little Lagoon. Special rules apply for licensed live bait dealers with permits for Special Live Bait Areas. These dealers can operate in a specific area near the Battleship Alabama from one hour before sunrise until sunset, starting June 1 through December 31, 2025.

The special live bait area is located beside the Battleship Alabama, south of the Tensaw River Bridge. The boundaries are marked by coordinates near Pinto Pass and Goat Island. This area will be open for live bait harvesting during the shrimping season.

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Orange Beach is looking to spend $287,604 received from opioid litigation settlements. The council wants to buy automated external defibrillators for the fire department. The council will discuss authorizing the money and buying the defibrillators at an upcoming work session. They will replace aging equipment.

New Pedestrian-Friendly Features Coming to Downtown Foley

Decorative lights will be added above city streets. The improvements are meant to create a more welcoming atmosphere.

Gulf Shores Eyes Traffic Fixes Near Bridge Project

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — Gulf Shores will present an analysis of the new traffic pattern in the Gulf Pines neighborhood because of the construction of the pedestrian bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway at East Second Street and Canal Road. The 90-degree intersection had to be closed for construction. Traffic now is routed down East Third Street to East 22nd Street and then west to East Second Avenue. The new route goes through a neighborhood and past Meyer Park.

Foley to Vote on $700K Cedar Street Sidewalk Project

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Foley will consider appropriating almost $700,000 to complete phase two of the North Cedar Street sidewalk. This portion of the project will run from Fern Street in the south to West Peachtree Avenue to the north. The winning bid was from James Brothers Excavating. It was under the budgeted amount and is projected to cost 698,984.
