Gulf Shores Eyes Traffic Fixes Near Bridge Project

Council to meet tonight on traffic and parking issues
Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — Gulf Shores will present an analysis of the new traffic pattern in the Gulf Pines neighborhood because of the construction of the pedestrian bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway at East Second Street and Canal Road. The 90-degree intersection had to be closed for construction. Traffic now is routed down East Third Street to East 22nd Street and then west to East Second Avenue. The new route goes through a neighborhood and past Meyer Park.
The city council will meet on June 2 at 4 p.m. in council chambers at city hall.
Several improvements have been made along the reroute, including widening, adding turn lanes and a traffic light at the intersection of East Third Street and East 24th Avenue.
Plans call for the completion of the bridge in the winter of 2026. See related story.
Also during the work session, the council will discuss authorizing a parking study in the Waterway Village District “to analyze existing parking, current and anticipated parking needs, and recommendations for the Waterway Village Overlay District,” which includes parts of the Gulf Pines neighborhood.
During the work session, the council will also discuss:
- Reappointing Mary Wayne Gilmore to the Beautification Board through June 10, 2028, and appointing David Harper to the Public Education Building Authority to fill the rest of Robert Malone’s term through Nov. 9, 2027.
- Appointing election officers for the Aug. 26 municipal elections. Evelyn Sanders will be the inspector for the Cultural Center on County Road 6 and Jan Steiskal will be the inspector for the Erie Meyer Civic Center.
- Declaring certain city property as surplus and authorizing its sale at auction. Only two items are on the May list, a 2017 Kubota tractor and a 1997 Ford F450 bucket truck.
- Amending the ordinance on false fire alarm and elevator entrapment calls to add fines. From Feb. 1-April 30, there were 68 false fire alarms and 15 calls for elevator entrapment, according to a memo from Fire Chief Mark Sealy.
- A request to annex into the city by Mr. and Mrs. Chase Mitchell at 5122 Skiff Lane.
- An appeal from Kevin Walker on a $1,525 fine for unpermitted removal of trees on a lot at 1449 East Fairway Drive. The planning commission recommends denying the request.
- An assembly permit for the Food Truck of America on Nov. 7-9 at the town green at Gulf Place.

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALES) is reporting that an Orange Beach woman died after a two-vehicle crash late Wednesday morning near Foley. The accident happened on South Hickory Street near Baldwin County 20. The ALEA said the crash involved a Chevrolet pickup and a Jeep SUV. Troopers are still investigating the cause of the crash.

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Foley now offers 12 public pickleball courts and 10 sand volleyball courts near the Coastal Alabama Farmer's and Fishermen’s Market. The city officially opened the new courts on Monday, June 2. Just minutes after the 6 p.m. opening, all 12 pickleball courts were full. Each court had four players enjoying the new space.
Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — The Gulf Shores Police Department has launched a full-time Marine Unit to improve safety on local waterways. The unit is responsible for patrolling the area, helping boaters, and responding to emergencies. The team also supports wildlife rescues and other marine-related issues. Officers are already working on the water this season and plan to grow their team.
Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — A dangerous intersection in Foley will soon undergo a redesign that city officials say is much needed. The Foley City Council unanimously approved a resolution to accept the portion of County Road 65 in the area of Airport Road and Little Rock Road from the Baldwin County Commission.

This announcement makes Foley part of a national movement that supports butterfly conservation and pollinator education. Monarch City USA made the designation official, recognizing Foley’s strong commitment to protecting local ecosystems and teaching residents about the importance of native species. The city is located in southern Baldwin County on Alabama’s Gulf Coast.
Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — An armed robbery call on May 27 led Foley police to a major investigation involving several agencies. Officers responded to Keil Trail off Dailey Lane around 6:50 p.m. after victims reported being held at gunpoint. Two firearms were stolen during the robbery. Police launched a search for the suspects immediately after arriving.
Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — The Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo is back for its 11th year, offering fun for anglers of all ages and skill levels. The event welcomes both seasoned fishermen and first-timers—no boat is required to compete. With prizes, live music, and food, it's a full weekend of Gulf Coast entertainment. Registration is now open and includes both youth and adult divisions.
Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Orange Beach is looking to spend $287,604 received from opioid litigation settlements. The council wants to buy automated external defibrillators for the fire department. The council will discuss authorizing the money and buying the defibrillators at an upcoming work session. They will replace aging equipment.
