'Paws for a Cause' Aims to Support Local Animal Nonprofits

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Anyone who knows anything about Orange Beach knows that the community cares deeply for animals, particularly those in need of help. With this spirit, the Perdido Beach Resort is hosting the inaugural "Paws for a Cause Charity Gala" on May 10, 2024. The event, scheduled from 6 PM to 10 PM, will raise funds for the Safe Harbor Animal Coalition (S.H.A.C.), a local organization dedicated to caring for homeless and abandoned cats and dogs in Baldwin County, Alabama.


The gala will be held in the resort's Grand Ballroom, featuring a silent auction, live music by the High Cotton Band, and various food stations. Doors open at 6 PM, with a cash bar available to attendees. The evening's program begins at 6:45 PM with speeches and an invocation. Guests can enjoy the music and dine from 7 PM to 8:15 PM, with the silent auction closing at 8:30 PM and dancing continuing until the end of the event.


Proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction will benefit S.H.A.C. and their partner non-profit organizations directly. Tickets can be purchased at AllEvents.in or at​​ happeningnext​.

Why is The Safe Harbor Surgery and Wellness Center so crucial, you might wonder? Let us share the SHAC's vision with you:


Currently, their surgery center operates out of 18430 County Road 12 in Foley. Despite their best efforts, they've quickly realized that they've outgrown their current space. The demand for their services, particularly for pre- and post-operative care for animals, has exceeded their capacity. This limitation means they can't expand their services to meet the needs of our community fully.


Historically, the SHAC has focused on serving shelters and legitimate 501(c)(3) animal rescue organizations. However, they've seen a significant demand from the public, especially those from low to moderate-income households. These households need affordable spaying and neutering options for their beloved pets. Additionally, rescues and shelters have been calling out for affordable wellness services. By making their services more accessible, they can stretch their dollars further, ultimately helping more animals in need.

The city will discuss formally ending its relationship with the Baldwin County Bridge Company at a joint regular/work session of Orange Beach City Council at 5 p.m. on May 7 at city hall in council chambers. The state announced in April it was buying the bridge from BCBC and ending toll collections sometime in May. This concludes the agreement where the city would receive a per car fee from the company that began in March of 2004.

Foley City Council to Transfer Beach Express to State of Alabama

As part of the agreement for the Alabama Department of Transportation to buy the Foley Beach Express toll bridge, Foley is turning over maintenance of its portion to the state. Since the expressway and toll bridge were built, Foley was responsible for maintaining the roadway from its beginning at State Route 59 to its intersection with County Road 12. As part of the purchase agreement, this portion will be taken over for maintenance by the state as part of an extended State Route 161.

A lot of changes are in the works in the Gulf Pines neighborhood in the area framed by the 90-degree turn at Tacky Jacks including a detour around the turn through the neighborhood and streetscapes planned to improve the streets with landscaping, benches and other amenities. The latest could be the inclusion of the streets there in the golf cart ordinance for the city. Adding those streets will be discussed at the May 6 council work session at 4 p.m. in council chambers at city hall.

NAS Pensacola Temporarily Closes to the Public for 3 Days This Week

Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola will be closed to the public from Tuesday through Thursday, according to a recent announcement. The National Naval Aviation Museum, Pensacola Lighthouse and Maritime Museum, and Fort Barrancas will all be closed to the public for these three days.
