Foley, Ala. - (OBA) - This week, the city of Foley is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its public library with a City Council proclamation on May 1st and a centennial celebration on May 3rd. The City Council is set to vote on declaring May 3rd as Public Library Day, coinciding with the library's centennial.
The Foley Community Welfare Club, which later became the Foley Women's Club, initiated the creation of the library as their first project on May 3, 1923. Now, the library holds over 88,000 items, computer labs, and various activities, making it a vital part of the community. City officials are currently developing plans to construct a new library in the near future.
The centennial celebration will be held at the library on Wednesday, featuring cake, punch, hors d'oeuvres, photos from the past century, and interviews with the mayor and other Foley citizens. Staff from the library's Local Alabama History Department will also be present to answer questions and discuss the library's history.
The event, open to the public, will take place from 10 a.m. to noon.
