Foley Plans $188K School Sidewalk Improvements at June 3rd Meeting

Foley Council Reviews Revitalization Plans and Budget Changes
Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – During its combined regular/work session tonight, the Foley City Council will consider several projects repairing a sidewalk on U.S. 98 from Cypress Street to Juniper and increasing budgets on other sidewalk projects near schools in the city.
James Bros. Excavating will do the repairs on U.S. 98 at a cost of $108,972 that are “in dire need of repair,” according to a memo from Darrell Russell of the Street Department. The other item the council will consider is adding $12,000 to a project improving sidewalks near Foley High School, Mathis Elementary and Foley Elementary schools for $188,000 also by James Bros.
During the meeting, the council will also:
- See a presentation on the Foley Revitalization and Beautification Advisory Board presentation from Gary Pitts, Patricia Davis, Pam Engel, Carolyne Hollis and Ellen Dean.
- Discuss the transfer of excess investment funds. No further details were given regarding this agenda item.
- Discuss an agreement between the city and Baldwin County on subdivision regulations in the planning jurisdiction of the city’s planning commission.
- Consider accepting public rights-of-way and infrastructure improvements in the Greystone Village subdivision for city maintenance.
- Discuss a liquor license for Novel Rose located at 103 W. Laurel Ave.
- Consider waiving fees for Pastor Juanita Houston to have a Worship in the Heights' event for the community.
- Hear a request to declare replacing fencing for softball fields at Aaronville Park as a capital project and transferring the money for it from the park maintenance account to a different account. The budget for the project is $48,000.
- Discuss amending the pay classification plans for the police department and the library.
- Consider purchasing a Harley Rake for the Street Department from Thompson Tractor for $14,325.
- Discuss a resolution of support for the Baldwin County bicycle and pedestrian connectivity plan.
- Consider spending $300,000 to add radios, lights and other equipment to nine vehicles purchased for the police department.
- Discuss approving a one-time donation of food and drinks to Vanessa Williams for an “Our Children Do Matter” Juneteenth Day Celebration.
- Consider approving halo tree lighting for six trees at city hall and electrical conduit to the library, Alston Street, Orange Avenue and Riviera Utilities. The tree lighting project will cost $49,734 and the conduit project will be funded in fiscal year 2025.
- Discuss applying for an Alabama Department of Transportation alternatives set-aside program.
- Consider a proposal from WAS design for landscaping, furniture and fencing along Cat Alley. The city is weighing bids from Cooper Fence for $8,221 and Hagan Fences for $8,565 and lighting and electrical work by Hellmich Electric for $27,000.
- Discuss waiving fees for Vacation Bible School in the Park on June 13 in Heritage Park.

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Mayors from Orange Beach and Gulf Shores have declared May 10, 2025, as C.A.K.E. Day. The event supports young entrepreneurs in starting and running their own businesses in the local community.
C.A.K.E. stands for "Creating And Keeping Enterprises." The program teaches students how to create and manage a business, including planning, marketing, and customer service skills.
Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – The Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival will return to Foley in the first weekend of May, bringing three days of live music, family activities, and hot air balloon displays to the area. Presented by Columbia Southern University, the annual event remains free to the public and continues to draw thousands of visitors from across the region.
Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – Foley's Midday Melodies, a free weekly music series held at Heritage Park, is extending its schedule by two weeks into April due to popular demand. The series, which featured performances each Wednesday in March, attracted large lunchtime crowds. Organizers decided to continue the concerts with two additional performances into April.
Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Today is Manatee Appreciation Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the conservation and protection of one of the most iconic and gentle marine mammals in our coastal waters — the West Indian manatee. While these slow-moving, plant-eating sea cows are often associated with Florida’s springs and lagoons, they also make their way west during the warmer months, becoming seasonal visitors to the Alabama Gulf Coast.
Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The Orange Beach Police Department is holding training exercises today near Orange Beach City Hall. People in the area may hear loud noises during the drills.
Police say there is no need to be alarmed. The exercises are planned and carried out in a safe and controlled setting.
Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – Hertz and Dollar will soon be available at Gulf Shores International Airport. This move comes as the airport prepares for Allegiant Air’s first flights starting May 21, 2025.
The airport announced Hertz will be the first on-site rental car provider. Hertz will operate under both the Hertz and Dollar brands. Travelers can start booking cars in early April.
Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – Foley’s municipal airport opened its doors to the public for an open house event, giving residents a chance to explore the facility and learn more about it.
The event took place on Saturday, March 22, and drew about 100 visitors. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions about airport operations and daily activities. One nearby resident said she had always wanted to see the airport up close since she lives next to it.
Gulf Shores, Ala. – Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are the largest economic drivers for Baldwin County. Both of their city schools have achieved the top testing scores in the State of Alabama. However, they have been denied any funds from a special tax which was created specifically fund schools within the boundaries of Baldwin County.
