Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – During the City Council's work session this week, Dan Bond who is the Environmental/Grants Coordinator, expressed the desire to push forward a program encouraging owners in the Little Lagoon area to switch their sewer service from septic tanks to sewer connections.
Bond mentioned that a resolution would allow the department to use funding from the "Little Lagoon Restoration Project." The project has a $5.9 million dollar grant from Restore Funding for a variety of restoration implementations.
The septic to sewer conversion program would incentivize eligible property owners to switch to a better environmental sewer process. The program would be available for owners within the Gulf Shores city limits and those living in the Little Lagoon watershed.
Property owners who complete the required construction work would be eligible for a reimbursement up to $6,500 for each site.
Bond stated that "roughly" 200 property owners appear eligible for the program. He said that each owner would have to make application with the City prior to starting the construction.
This project has been a long-time goal of the City and many environmental groups. Mr. Bond added that his department has been working closely with the Little Lagoon Preservation Society and has also opened a website for further information at: https://restorelittlelagoon.org/.
