Flood Ordinance Update on Council Agenda

Gulf Shores City Hall

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – During a Feb. 19 work session, Gulf Shores will consider accepting a proposal from Engineering Design Group for a survey and right-of-way acquisition for phase one of the Waterway West project for $21,600.

This project will realign Waterway West to eliminate a hairpin turn at West First Street and State Route 59.

“The work to be performed by EDG is essential to attain surveys and legal descriptions of property that will need to be transferred from ALDOT and the private property owners to the city in order to control the right-of-way necessary to construct the realigned Waterway West Blvd,” a memo from Construction Manager Clint Colvin states. “EDG will also assist the city with right-of-way acquisition, and will ultimately create a subdivision plat of the reconfigured right-of-way and resulting lots.”

The city council will meet in a work session on Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. in council chambers at city hall. During the work session, the council will discuss:

  • Adopting an amendment to the flood damage prevention Ordinance to meet the current standards set by FEMA.
  • Approving liquor licenses for Shipwreck Kellys, two Sea Store Liquor stores all at 4159 County Road 6 in suites A, B and C in the former Happy Harbor at Oyster Bay spot.
  • Reappointing Marcy Kichler to the personnel board for three years through March 27, 2027.
  • Hiring Kadre Engineering to design drainage improvements for Shady Woods Court for $44,500 to address flooding issues on the west side of the street.
  • Consider a request from the Hammered Crab restaurant to construct two public parking spaces within the East 13th Avenue right of way at 1220 Gulf Shores Parkway. Staff recommends approving construction of the spaces and counting them toward the restaurant’s required parking.
  • Granting a taxi franchise for Robin Wright to operate Robin’s Rides Taxi Service in the city.
  • Awarding a bid for five UTVs for beach rescue from Gulf Shores Power Sports for $87,835.
  • Authorizing two memorandums of understanding with Valor Hospitality, operators of the Gulf State Park Lodge and with the state park to provide lifeguard services at the lodge and the Saltwater Pavilion.
  • Consider a conditional use permit for a site plan Canal Park Condominiums for a 10-unit development on a lot that fronts Canal Drive East on the north and East 24th Avenue on the south to be licensed for vacation rentals.
  • Hear a rezoning request for .90 acres on West 36th Avenue to neighborhood business. It is located south of the city’s recycling center and according to Baldwin County tax records it is owned by Janet Newberry.
  • Awarding a franchise to Sun Coast Beach Service to operate a beach chair and umbrella concession in the city.
  • Authorizing the mayor to sign an agreement with Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Sports and Events and Southern States Athletic Conference to conduct track championships at the Sportsplex on April 21-23.
