Perdido Key Sees First Sea Turtle Hatch of the Season

Seventy Sea Turtle Hatchlings Enter Gulf at Perdido Key
Perdido Key, Fla. – (OBA) – Perdido Key celebrated its first sea turtle hatch of the season. Seventy hatchlings were confirmed to have entered the Gulf of Mexico, despite being disoriented by artificial lighting, according to Escambia County Marine Resources.
The hatching occurred on Perdido Key on Friday, Aug. 2nd.
Nearly 60% of all turtle hatchlings were disoriented by land-based lights, which can cause them to wander away from the Gulf of Mexico. Hatchlings that don't reach the water quickly risk dehydration, starvation, and predation.
Disoriented hatchlings can also stray onto busy roads, garages, and swimming pools. Permitted volunteers are trained in disoriented hatchling response and recovery. Naturally dark beaches are the best assurance for ensuring hatchling turtles make it to the water where they belong.
There are still 25 nests on county beaches, with August and September being peak hatchling season. Residents and visitors are urged to follow guidelines to protect the hatchlings and other coastal wildlife.
Guidelines for protecting sea turtles include:
- Lights Out: Both hatchling and nesting turtles need dark beaches to find the Gulf of Mexico. Use red flashlights on the beach at night and turn off beach-facing lights.
- Leave Only Footprints: Remove all furniture and toys from the beach when you're done for the day. This includes hammocks, tents, canopies, chairs, toys, and sports equipment.
- If You Dig It, Fill It: Large holes, trenches, and moats create dangerous obstacles for hatchlings. Fill in holes after digging them and flatten sandcastles when finished building them.
- If you see a nest hatching or encounter hatchlings on the beach, stay a respectful distance away and call Escambia County Marine Resources at (850) 426-1257. C.A.K.E. stands for "Creating And Keeping Enterprises." The program teaches students how to create and manage a business, including planning, marketing, and customer service skills.
Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – The Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival will return to Foley in the first weekend of May, bringing three days of live music, family activities, and hot air balloon displays to the area. Presented by Columbia Southern University, the annual event remains free to the public and continues to draw thousands of visitors from across the region.
Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – Foley's Midday Melodies, a free weekly music series held at Heritage Park, is extending its schedule by two weeks into April due to popular demand. The series, which featured performances each Wednesday in March, attracted large lunchtime crowds. Organizers decided to continue the concerts with two additional performances into April.
Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Today is Manatee Appreciation Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the conservation and protection of one of the most iconic and gentle marine mammals in our coastal waters — the West Indian manatee. While these slow-moving, plant-eating sea cows are often associated with Florida’s springs and lagoons, they also make their way west during the warmer months, becoming seasonal visitors to the Alabama Gulf Coast.
Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The Orange Beach Police Department is holding training exercises today near Orange Beach City Hall. People in the area may hear loud noises during the drills.
Police say there is no need to be alarmed. The exercises are planned and carried out in a safe and controlled setting.
Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – Hertz and Dollar will soon be available at Gulf Shores International Airport. This move comes as the airport prepares for Allegiant Air’s first flights starting May 21, 2025.
The airport announced Hertz will be the first on-site rental car provider. Hertz will operate under both the Hertz and Dollar brands. Travelers can start booking cars in early April.
Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – Foley’s municipal airport opened its doors to the public for an open house event, giving residents a chance to explore the facility and learn more about it.
The event took place on Saturday, March 22, and drew about 100 visitors. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions about airport operations and daily activities. One nearby resident said she had always wanted to see the airport up close since she lives next to it.
Gulf Shores, Ala. – Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are the largest economic drivers for Baldwin County. Both of their city schools have achieved the top testing scores in the State of Alabama. However, they have been denied any funds from a special tax which was created specifically fund schools within the boundaries of Baldwin County.
