Foley residents can receive a free tree and gardening tips

Residents receive trees during the 2024 Foley Arbor Day celebration.

Foley, Ala. – (OBA) –  Foley residents will have the opportunity to receive a free tree and expert horticulture advice during the city's annual Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, Feb. 22.

The 44th annual Foley Arbor Day event is set to begin at 1 p.m. at the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermen’s Market, located at 781 Farmers Market Way.

As part of the event, the city will dedicate three trees in honor of local citizens who made significant contributions to the community. This year’s memorial trees will be dedicated to former Mayor John Koniar, former City Administrator A. Perry Wilbourne, and F.A. “Skip” Davis, a former City Council member and local business owner. All three individuals passed away in 2024.

The city will give away 675 trees, each planted in 3-gallon containers, during the Arbor Day celebration. Residents can receive one tree during the event.

Varieties of trees being given away include bald cypress, Nellie R. Stevens holly, willow oak, live oak, summer red maple, green giant arborvitae, Carolina sapphire and Japanese cedar.

Foley has been recognized as a Tree City USA for promoting the planting of trees. Trees reduce erosion, cut heating and cooling costs, produce oxygen, provide a habitat for wildlife and add beauty to the environment.

The Alabama Forestry Commission, Baldwin County Master Gardeners, Riviera Utilities and certified arborists will also take part in the event.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 77 will help distribute trees.

The winning posters from the Arbor Day Poster Contest will be on display. The Foley High School Air Force Junior ROTC will do the presentation of colors.
