Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – A new metal wind sculpture will soon be added to Foley’s Antique Rose Trail. The artwork will be installed along the Perry Wilbourne section of the trail, next to the city’s Post Office just south of U.S. 98.
The Foley City Council recently approved the project, which was recommended by the Foley Revitalization and Beautification Board. The board will cover the full cost using funds from its current budget.
The sculpture, designed by artist Lyman Whitaker, will stand about 18 feet tall and measure 5 feet, 5 inches wide. Whitaker is known for his wind-powered pieces that move gracefully with the breeze.
Brenda Shambo, the city’s liaison to the board, said the new addition will enhance the trail and help bring more public art to downtown Foley.
“His works are hand crafted for balance, durability and high winds,” she said. “Each sculpture lasts for decades with very little maintenance involved. The sculpture will add an artistic appeal on the Rose Trail in the new section.”
She said the copper and steel sculpture will be placed in a circular area that also includes shrubs.
“These sculptures require virtually no maintenance because they spin on a sealed bearing that you replace every 15 years or so,” she said. “It can take winds of up to 90 miles an hour and these sculptures are designed to start spinning with a slight breeze of two to three miles per hour.”
If a hurricane with stronger winds threatens the area, the sculptures are designed to be taken down for safe keeping.
