Foley Council Reviews $415K Sanitation Truck Purchase

Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – In order to be sure the city gets new sanitation trucks in a timely manner, the Foley City Council will talk about placing an early order for four units from Sansom Equipment from Mobile.

 

The council will meet in a joint work/regular session on June 17 in council chambers at city hall. One item on the agenda is to authorize the mayor to send a letter of intent to Sansom Equipment for two Kenworth L770 Chassis trucks and two side-pickup Sidewinder XTRs for $415,665 for the Sanitation Department.

 

The letter is meant “to reserve our place in the production line” and the new trucks will be included in the 2025 fiscal year budget and their purchase will come before the council after Oct. 1.

 

During the meeting, the council will also:

  • Approving expenditures during May for a total of $14.4 million.
  • Receive a report on taxes collected in May including $3.4 million in sales taxes or about $150,000 more than May of 2023 and about $47,000 higher than budget projections. Lodging taxes in May totaled $186,524 or about $8,000 more than May of 2023 and $29,000 higher than budget projections.
  • Accept a report from Community Development issuing 28 single-family home building permits with a valuation of $9.3 million and 79 residential rentals with a valuation of $18.4 million. There were two commercial building permits issued to Stowaway Storage with a valuation of $468,396.
  • Receive a monthly report from the police department showing 245 inmates were processed through the city jail for a total of 1,127 for the year. During May, there were 22 arrests for shoplifting, 18 for possession of a controlled substance, 14 for simple assault domestic violence, 13 for drug paraphernalia, 12 for theft and four death investigations. Officers were dispatched on calls 2,101 times during May.
  • Receive a monthly report from the fire department showing crews were called out 57 times to assist an invalid, 56 times for medical assistance, 35 times for a motor vehicle accident without injuries and 13 times for accidents with injuries and 11 times for an aircraft standby. Crews were called out 18 times and canceled enroute had a total of 264 calls for service in May.
  • Discuss granting a franchise agreement to Southern Light to install fiber-optic lines in rights of way in the city. 
  • Consider an ordinance approving an agreement with Baldwin County about subdivision regulations in the city’s planning jurisdiction. The planning commission gave the ordinance a favorable recommendation in its May 15 meeting.
  • Discuss issuing liquor licenses for Slappin Daks in OWA and Superior Crab Seafood at 1141 S. McKenzie St.
  • Consider declaring fencing at Aaronville Park as surplus.
  • Set up public hearings for nuisance weeds at 818 W. Michigan Ave., 1810 S. Cedar St., lot 25 of Elizabeth Place, green space at Village at Hickory Street and the common area in phase 3-A at Live Oak Village and ordering the properties cleaned up.
  • Hear a report on bids let by the city in May including $34,959 to Del-Con for installation of utilities and oversight for the Wolf Creek Park bathroom building, $40,828 to Complete Signs for signs at the Foley Event Center, $8,325 to Gulf Coast Fence for the Mathis Park Playground fence, $17,711 to FIS Outdoor for irrigation supplies and $92,000 to Kent’s Landscaping for sod for new soccer fields at Ralph Schumacher Park. A project for a well and pump for the new fields has not been awarded.
  • Discuss reappointing Pamela Monroe to the Housing Authority Board after her term expires on July 17.
  • Consider waiving fees for using Heritage Park and pavilion for Adrian Hill and Golden Knight General Konstruction for the annual Alzheimer’s Remembrance Walk fundraiser on Oct. 5.
  • Discuss paying $219 for weed abatement and have a public hearing for Lot 1 of East Laurel Avenue.
  • Consider the purchase of K9 dual-purpose dog to replace Bronco who recently died.
  • Discuss approving amendment 2 of the airport franchise and license agreement with Lightning Aviation to extend the terms of the agreement.
  • Consider paying Riviera Utilities $25,000 to replace a damaged light pole on East Verbena Avenue and moving it from the south side to the north side of the street.
  • Discuss a resolution approving the Beulah Heights drainage project design by Thompson Engineering for $160,000 to help alleviate flooding in the neighborhood.
  • Consider appointing Chloe Salinas to the Foley Revitalization and Beautification Advisory Board.

Baldwin Beach Express II Moves Forward With Land Acquisition

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – On February 4, 2025, the Baldwin County Commission approved significant measures to advance the Baldwin Beach Express II project, focusing on the segment from Interstate 10 to the Styx River. The commission allocated $4 million from the Capital Project Fund for right-of-way acquisition and authorized Volkert, Inc., an on-call consultant, to perform these acquisition services with fees not exceeding $282,000.
