Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Columbia Southern University (CSU) has appointed JoAnne Bass as its new strategic advisor for government, military, and community relations. She served as the personal advisor to the Chief of Staff and the Secretary of the Air Force on all issues regarding the welfare, readiness, morale, and proper utilization and progress of more than 600,000 Total Force Airmen. Chief Bass was the 19th chief master sergeant appointed to the highest noncommissioned officer position.

Bass has a distinguished career spanning over 31 years in the defense sector, culminating in her role as the highest-ranking enlisted member in the Air Force. Notably, Bass was the first woman to achieve this rank in any military service.

“I’m thrilled to join the Columbia Southern University team,” said Bass. “CSU is doing remarkable work to advance higher education across the nation and globally. Addressing national challenges requires a whole-of-society approach, and CSU is leading the way in affordability and accessibility.”

In her new role, Bass will use her leadership and organizational skills to support CSU’s mission. She will help shape strategic initiatives, foster a healthy culture, and enhance CSU’s engagement with government, military, and community relations.

Throughout her career, Bass advised the Chief of Staff and the Secretary of the Air Force on issues regarding the welfare, readiness, and morale of U.S. Airmen. She has significant experience in joint service and special operations, participating in several operations and exercises, including Operations Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom.
