City council votes to change East Canal Road speed limits

East Canal Road New Speed Limits in Orange Beach

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – In a move aimed at enhancing road safety, the Orange Beach City Council voted on Tuesday evening to implement new speed limits on various segments of East Canal Road. The decision comes on the heels of the recent opening of a new roundabout on East Canal Road, which marked a significant milestone in the ongoing road widening project.

NOTE: Golf Carts are NOT allowed anywhere on Canal Road. Golf Carts can cross Canal Road at the pedestrian crosswalk on the east end of the roundabout.

The new speed limits are as follows:

  • From Orange Beach Blvd. (Hwy 161) to Bay Circle, the speed limit is now 28 mph.

  • From Bay Circle to Wilson Blvd., the speed limit has been set at 40 mph.

  • From Wilson Blvd. to the end of East Canal Road at Perdido Gate in Bear Point, the speed limit is 45 mph.

Ongoing Road Widening Project

The speed limit changes are part of a larger initiative that includes the East Canal Road widening project. Initiated in September 2022, the project aims to expand approximately 1.4 miles of the road to three lanes, including a middle turn lane. The project is expected to be completed before the spring of 2024 and is primarily funded by the Resources and Ecosystem Sustainability, Tourism Opportunities, and Revived Economies of the Gulf Coast States Act of 2012 (RESTORE Act).

Safety Measures

Motorists are advised to exercise caution when navigating the new traffic pattern, especially within the newly opened roundabout where vehicles in the roundabout have the right of way. During the construction phase, a speed limit of 25 mph was strictly enforced to ensure the safety of all individuals involved.
