Orange Beach Council mulls $2M Sportsplex upgrades in this week’s council meeting

Orange Beach Debates New Liquor Licenses and City Transportation Plan

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Orange Beach continues to make steps for improvements at its Sportsplex at the south end of William Silvers Parkway.


At the Aug. 15 joint work/regular session, the council will consider awarding bids for two projects there worth a combined $2 million. One is to Rolin Construction for $1.3 million for installing artificial turf on the baseball field and improving the dugouts there as well. Another seeks to spend $83,800 for replacing shade sails and the contractor is Complete Roofing.


A third item concerning the Sportsplex will be buying artificial turf for the football/soccer stadium for $436,570.


Also, the council will consider a $720,000 contract also with Rolin Construction for the interior build out of the new Wildlife Center on Powerline Road.


During the regular session, the council will discuss:


Paying out $1.6 million to various vendors for purchases or services for the city.


Approving a liquor license for Fairfield Inn and Suites behind the Walmart Neighborhood Market.


Approving a liquor license for China Dragon in the Rouses shopping center.


Authorizing a contract with McCollough Architecture for surfaces.


A resolution to adopt a city transportation plan for 2024.


Extending a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for nuisance wildlife control services.


An appeal from Ike’s Beach Service of the denial of a business license for operating a parasail boat and other marine-based businesses from state park accesses in the city. There will be a public hearing on the case.


Changing the planned unit development ordinance for the Buena Vista Luxury RV resort to allow for an outdoor kitchen. There will be a first reading of the ordinance and a public hearing.


A first reading of an ordinance appointing members to the Board of Adjustment including Linda Bradley, Greg Kennedy, Ryan Beebe, David DiChiara and McGee Scarbrough.


During the work session, the council will:


Discuss reappointing Susan Boggs to the board of directors of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism.


Discuss an agreement with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management for the city to provide permitting, regulating, monitoring and inspection services at a cost of $37,950. ADEM will reimburse the city.


Discuss amending the city’s procurement policy as related to Restore Act funds being administered by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for the north sewer force main sewer upgrade project.


Consider authorizing the execution of a subaward grant agreement with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for the removal and recycling of large-scale marine debris caused by Hurricane Sally in the amount of $367,959.44.


Consider a resolution authorizing a contract with Watermark Design Group for architectural services.


Discuss a resolution authorizing a contract Watermark Design Group to provide design, bid, and construction administration services for roof replacement at the


Justice Center due to damage from the April 10, 2021, hailstorm in the amount of $75,800.


Resolution authorizing a contract McCollough Architecture to provide design services for an event pavilion at the Coastal Arts Center for $13,500.


Consider a resolution of funds to the Orange Beach Board of Education to support city school system operations. There was no amount listed in the agenda for the meeting.


Discuss a resolution authorizing a contract with McLean Motor Sports Productions for the “Bama Coast Cruisin” event as part of the 2023 Freedom Fest on Oct. 6-7 at The Wharf.


Discuss setting a public hearing date to consider the business license revocation of Super Salt Life for charter boat “Southern Belle.” The suggested date was Sept. 5.


Discuss setting a public hearing to amend an ordinance for the school board to have use of storage buildings west of the school. The suggested date was Sept. 5th.


Consider amending an ordinance to ban exotic animals in the city and provide regulations for sheltering animals by staffers of recognized wildlife associations and zoos.


Discuss amending an ordinance to allow for attending meetings electronically.

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Orange Beach will take a new city ordinance to further prohibit “commercial activity” on beaches, shorelines and waterways in the city. “There have been some business licenses that have come through recently that we needed some clarification on,” Deputy Coastal Resources Director Nicole Woerner said. “We just don’t want our beaches to be overrun and our waterways with people just selling and doing all kinds of things.”
