Dauphin Island, Ala. – (OBA) – The Billy Goat Hole Boat Ramp on Dauphin Island will temporarily close for renovations starting one week from today, Sunday, February 23rd, at 6pm. The project, led by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' Marine Resources Division (MRD), aims to enhance safety and accessibility for boaters and visitors.
During the closure, the existing ramps and docks will be replaced and relocated about 30 feet further from Bienville Boulevard. This adjustment is designed to improve vehicle maneuverability and reduce traffic disruptions. The new docks will feature durable composite decking and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Additional upgrades include an ADA-compliant lift and a wheelchair-accessible ramp for better restroom and concession access.
The renovations build on improvements made in 2023 when the parking area was upgraded. Construction is expected to take about four months, with a reopening date to be announced later. Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its benefits for access to local waterways like the Gulf, Mobile Bay, and Mississippi Sound.
Funding for the project comes from the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA), approved by Alabama Governor Kay Ivey. ADCNR Commissioner Chris Blankenship emphasized the importance of the facility, noting it is Coastal Alabama's busiest boat ramp and a key resource for local boaters and anglers.
