Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Closures on the Gulf Coast

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, various municipalities along the Gulf Coast have announced closures and schedule adjustments for city services and facilities. The City of Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Foley are among the key areas where non-essential administrative offices will be closed on Monday, January 15, 2024.

City of Orange Beach

  • Non-essential City of Orange Beach offices will be closed on Monday, January 15th in observance of the 2024 Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
  • Trash and recycling routes will run on normal schedules and will not be affected.
  • City offices will reopen for normal business hours on Tuesday, January 16th.


City of Gulf Shores

Gulf Shores, Ala. – “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Please take note of the following City closures in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

  • Administrative offices for the City of Gulf Shores will be closed on Monday, January 15. Regular operations will resume on Tuesday, January 16.
  • Police, fire, and other emergency services will remain open to ensure public safety and health.
  • The regularly scheduled City Council Work Session (Committee of the Whole) meeting has been rescheduled for Tuesday, January 16, at 4 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
  • The City Store will be closed on Monday, January 15, and will resume regular operations on Tuesday, January 16.
  • The Thomas B. Norton Public Library and the Gulf Shores Museum will be closed from Saturday, January 13, to Monday, January 15. Regular operations for the library and museum will resume on Tuesday, January 16.
  • The Bodenhamer Recreation Center will be open on January 15 from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • The George C. Meyer Tennis Center will be closed on January 15. Courts will be open and available for public use. Regular operation hours will resume on Tuesday, January 16.
  • The Cultural Center will be closed on January 15. Regular operations will resume on Tuesday, January 16.
  • The Pickleball Courts located at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex (19025 Oak Road West) will remain open and available for play.
  • Republic Services Garbage and Recycling Services will run as scheduled. Yard debris/bulky pickup will run as scheduled.

City of Foley

Foley city offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 15, in commemoration of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. 

  • The two city museums, the Holmes Medical Museum and Foley Depot Railroad Museum will be open Monday during regular hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • The Foley Public Library will also be closed Monday. All offices will reopen at the usual time on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
  • The Foley City Council meeting, which is usually held on the first and third Monday of each month, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 16.
  • Monday's collection of recyclable materials will take place Tuesday, Jan. 16. Pick-ups scheduled for the remainder of the week will not be affected. The collection of limbs and yard debris will resume Tuesday as well. Residents are asked to be patient if routes are delayed until crews can catch up with collection.

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The Blessing of the Fleet is a centuries-old tradition that began in Mediterranean fishing communities, where local clergy would bless fishing vessels to ensure a safe and bountiful season. This practice was brought to the United States by Catholic immigrants and has been embraced by various coastal communities. One of the earliest recorded Blessing of the Fleet ceremonies in the U.S. took place in Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1929.

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Orange Beach will take a new city ordinance to further prohibit “commercial activity” on beaches, shorelines and waterways in the city. “There have been some business licenses that have come through recently that we needed some clarification on,” Deputy Coastal Resources Director Nicole Woerner said. “We just don’t want our beaches to be overrun and our waterways with people just selling and doing all kinds of things.”
