Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – The Foley Main Street Community Foundation, on behalf of multiple local stakeholders, has announced a Request for Proposals (RFP) to create artistic bicycle racks to enhance Downtown Foley. This initiative seeks to combine practicality with artistry, providing secure and aesthetically pleasing bicycle storage solutions.

Project Overview

Recognizing the growing appeal of bicycling and the corresponding need for reliable parking solutions, this project invites artists from all backgrounds to contribute designs that balance functionality with creative expression.

Design Guidelines

Adhering to established best practices, proposed designs must accommodate at least two bicycles, support the use of "U lock" mechanisms, and be constructed from durable, bike-friendly materials. Compliance with city sidewalk regulations is also required to ensure pedestrian access remains unobstructed.

Project Scope and Budget

The Foundation has allocated $20,000 for this project, with a maximum of $4,000 dedicated to each bike rack covering design, fabrication, delivery, and installation assistance. The project timeline spans from May to October 2024, culminating in a dedication ceremony.

Material and Thematic Considerations

Artists have the freedom to select materials (excluding aluminum) that can withstand outdoor conditions and regular use. Themes reflecting Foley’s rich history, vibrant arts scene, and distinctive locales are encouraged. Six priority sites have been identified for the installation of these bike racks.

Submission Requirements

Proposals should include detailed designs, past work examples, an artist biography, fabrication and maintenance plans, and a comprehensive budget. Submissions must be received by April 30, 2024, with selection announcements following in early May.

Selection Process

The selection of finalists and ultimately the commissioned artist will be based on proposal quality, budget adherence, and the potential for an interview. The chosen artist will enter into a contract with the Foley Main Street Community Foundation, which reserves the right to make final adjustments to ensure the project's historical and aesthetic integrity.

Interested artists are encouraged to submit their proposals to the Foley Main Street Community Foundation via email and direct any inquiries to Darrelyn Dunmore. This project represents a unique opportunity to contribute to Foley’s cultural and community landscape through innovative and functional art.
