New K9 Jango takes over as Darlin enjoys retirement

A ‘Darlin’ Life: Gulf Shores K9 Officer Hangs Up Her Handcuffs

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – The days of sniffing out crime have come to an end for an nine-year-old K9 cop in Gulf Shores.

K9 Darlin retired this week after eight years in service.

During her time as a narcotic's detector, she helped sniff out 159 pounds of methamphetamine, 171 pounds of cocaine, 93.5 pounds of marijuana and 5.5 pounds of heroin.

Her handler, Sgt. Stacy McElroy, had the dog as a pet before turning him into his partner in fighting crime.

“While employed with the Gulf Shores Police Department, Sgt. McElroy was assigned to the Special Operations Unit in partnership with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office,” the Gulf Shores Police Department stated. “He saw something special in Darlin - an extraordinary drive that could serve our community. Through specialized training at Escambia County Florida Sheriff's K9 Academy, Darlin transformed from a beloved pet to an elite narcotic detector.”

The city honored Darlin’s service with a special retirement ceremony packed with doggy fun including toys and treats, a special doggy doughnut from Parlor Doughnuts and a plaque.

Now, at 9 years old, Darlin is hanging up her badge and passing the torch to K9 Jango. While she'll be missed on the force, we know she'll be enjoying a well-deserved retirement with her favorite human, Sgt. McElroy.

Thank you for your service, K9 Darlin'! You've made Gulf Shores a safer place for everyone.

While Darlin' may be retiring from active duty, her legacy lives on through the Gulf Shores Police Association's K9s for Kids program! You can purchase your very own K9 Darlin plush by clicking here.
