Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – On September 5, 2023, at approximately 6:59 P.M., law enforcement officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident involving injuries on the 21000 block of East Beach Blvd. Upon arrival, officers discovered a female driver trapped inside her damaged vehicle. Two other vehicles were also involved in the collision, sustaining heavy damage and obstructing the roadway.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado, operated by Michael Adam Hasty, 34, of Gulf Shores, was traveling westbound near The Lodge at Gulf State Park. Witnesses reported that the truck was exceeding the speed limit before it veered across the center turn lane, colliding head-on with two eastbound vehicles.
Medical personnel transported the entrapped female driver to a medical facility for treatment of head injuries. Based on evidence and observations at the scene, officers suspected that Hasty was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was subsequently arrested and charged with Driving While Under the Influence and Assault in the Third Degree.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), every day, about 37 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes. In 2021 alone, 13,384 people lost their lives in alcohol-impaired driving accidents, marking a 14% increase from the previous year.
