Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – National Beach Safety Week, sponsored annually by the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA). Its purpose is to raise awareness about the importance of beach and water safety as the beach season begins. This year, the event starts tomorrow and runs from May 20 to May 27, coinciding with the week leading up to Memorial Day.

Importance of Beach Safety on the Alabama Gulf Coast

The Alabama Gulf Coast, known for its beautiful beaches and popular tourist destinations like Gulf Shores, Fort Morgan and Orange Beach, attracts thousands of visitors each summer. With this influx of beachgoers, many of whom have never been around the gulf or an ocean, it's crucial to emphasize safety measures to prevent accidents and ensure a fun and secure experience for everyone.

Top 10 Beach & Water Safety Tips

The USLA's top 10 beach and water safety tips are essential guidelines that can significantly reduce the risk of incidents. These tips are especially relevant for the Alabama Gulf Coast, where varying weather conditions and ocean currents can pose challenges.

The tips are as follows:

  1. Swim Near a Lifeguard: Lifeguards are trained to respond to emergencies and can provide immediate assistance if needed. Swimming near a lifeguard ensures an extra layer of safety.
  2. Learn to Swim: Proficiency in swimming can prevent many water-related accidents. Local swim lessons are often available for people of all ages.
  3. Learn Rip Current Safety: Rip currents are powerful and can quickly pull swimmers out to sea. Understanding how to escape a rip current can save lives.
  4. Never Swim Alone: Having a companion can be crucial in case of an emergency.
  5. Designate a Water Watcher: Assigning someone to continuously watch swimmers, especially children, can prevent accidents.
  6. Alcohol & Water Don’t Mix: Alcohol impairs judgment and coordination, increasing the risk of drowning.
  7. Feet First Water Entry: Entering the water feet first can prevent head and spine injuries.
  8. Life Jackets Save Lives: Wearing life jackets is particularly important for weak swimmers and young children.
  9. Observe Signs & Flags: Beach warning flags and signs provide critical information about current water conditions.
  10. Beat the Heat & Block the Sun: Protecting against sunburn and heatstroke is essential for a safe beach experience.

In addition to the above, beachgoers should be aware of other potential hazards such as dangerous marine life; jellyfish, sharks, stingrays, etc. Local beach patrols and lifeguards are trained to identify and respond to these dangers, making their guidance invaluable for a safe beach experience; so when they advise you to get out of the water, you should listen.

Local governments and organizations along the Alabama Gulf Coast support National Beach Safety Week through various initiatives. These include issuing proclamations, providing daily surf condition updates, providing lifeguards on certain beaches, and distributing educational materials.

As summer approaches, it is crucial for beachgoers along the Alabama Gulf Coast to prioritize safety and stay informed about current conditions. By following the guidance of local authorities, respecting warning flags, and exercising caution in the water, everyone can enjoy the beautiful beaches while minimizing risks.
