Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries has announced the reopening of the recreational fishing season for greater amberjack in the Gulf of Mexico. Starting at 12:01 a.m. on May 1, 2024, and ending at 12:01 a.m. on June 1, 2024, fishermen can enjoy catching this popular species.


Currently, the greater amberjack season is open from August 1 to October 31 and for the month of May, as decided by the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council and enforced by NOAA Fisheries. This regulation includes a measure to close the season once the annual catch target is reached or is expected to be reached. Last year, the season was set from August 1 to August 25, 2023, based on catch target projections.


Recent data suggests the catch target for greater amberjack has not been met, leading to the decision to reopen the season in May 2024. The season will pause again starting June 1, 2024, for its second seasonal closure. This decision allows recreational fishermen additional opportunities to catch greater amberjack while managing the species' sustainability.
