South Baldwin breaks ground on freestanding emergency department

New Gulf Shores building going up near the airport with Highway 59 access
(OBA®) – Gulf Shores, AL – On June 18, South Baldwin Regional Medical Center welcomed community, business and healthcare leaders to a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction at the new South Baldwin Regional Medical Center Freestanding Emergency Department in Gulf Shores.
The freestanding emergency department, which will be located adjacent to Jack Edwards Airport in Gulf Shores, with State Route 59 frontage, will be available 24-7 to serve patients who experience medical emergencies.
“We are committed to expanding access to emergency services to meet the needs of our rapidly growing community,” said SBRMC Chief Executive Officer Daniel McKinney. “SBRMC Freestanding Emergency Department will provide faster access to emergency care for people living in the area south of our main campus. We are dedicated to bring the same award-winning quality and safety care to this facility as our main campus.”
Many emergency services can be effectively managed at freestanding emergency departments without the need for transfer to a traditional hospital setting. Like any hospital ER, the new SBRMC building will be equipped to treat patients with illnesses and injuries that require a higher level of care than urgent care facilities offer. The 14,400 square-foot facility will have a helipad, nine private patient rooms with radiology and lab services on-site.
If a higher level of care is required, patients can be transported quickly to the main campus. Emergency healthcare experienced physicians, registered nurses and other patient care providers will staff the center.
“Our team of emergency physicians is excited about all of the current projects involving emergency medicine in Baldwin County. Between SBRMC Freestanding ED and our main hospital ED, we will be well-equipped to handle the emergency needs of those living in and visiting the Gulf Coast community for years to come,” Dr. William Beazley, Medical Director for the SBRMC Emergency Department said.
Construction is expected to start July 2020 with an anticipated opening of summer 2021. More than 30 new jobs will be created to serve patients at the new center, including registered nurses and lab, imaging, admitting and environmental services staff. Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Mobile, Alabama has issued an Enhanced Risk warning for severe weather across most of the Gulf Coast region late tonight into early Sunday morning. An intense squall line is expected to move through the area, bringing the potential for damaging winds exceeding 70 mph and the possibility of embedded tornadoes. Some storms may develop ahead of the main line, carrying a risk of tornadoes, including the potential for strong EF2+ tornadoes. The severe weather threat is anticipated between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The Orange Beach Festival of Art has been named one of the top 20 art festivals in the country by USA Today. Now, the public can help it claim the top spot by voting online until Monday, February 17th.
For more than 50 years, the festival has showcased fine arts on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Each year, over 100 artists, including painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelry makers, and glassblowers, are selected through a jury process. The event, held annually on the second weekend of March, draws more than 20,000 visitors from across the country.

Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – A Foley, Alabama man has been arrested on charges of sexually abusing a child under 12 years old after an investigation by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO). Marcus Hunter Thomas, 36, was identified as the suspect in a case involving repeated abuse over the past year in Baldwin County.
Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – On January 3, 2025, Baldwin County Sheriff's deputies responded to a death in Foley, AL. Inside the home, they found drug paraphernalia and suspected drugs. The Baldwin County Drug Task Force and Coroner's Office were called to assist.
Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – Downtown Foley is set to bring a festive twist to its monthly Third Thursday event with a Mardi Gras-themed celebration on February 20, one week from today. From 5-7 p.m., participating local businesses will welcome visitors with special promotions, a lively atmosphere, and the chance to take part in the Mardi Gras Bingo Bonanza. Shoppers can collect stamps on their bingo cards as they explore downtown, with a completed card earning them a chance to win a $200 prize package.
Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – The FBI arrested a fifth suspect in connection to a fraudulent lottery scam.
Multiple agencies have been working to take suspects into custody since last Friday, when four arrests were made as part of Operation Jamaican Knights.
Dauphin Island, Ala. – (OBA) – Officials from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) will host a public meeting about the Dauphin Island West End Beach Renourishment Project. The meeting will take place on March 6 at 6 p.m. at the Dauphin Island Community Center.
