Seashell Seekers Day

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Today marks National Seashell Day, a celebration for seashell enthusiasts and beachcombers alike. The Gulf Coast, known for its stunning shorelines, offers a treasure trove of seashells, making it a prime spot for those looking to enjoy the day's festivities.

The Gulf Coast is a haven for various seashell species. Among the most commonly found shells are:

  1. Olive Shells: These sleek, glossy shells are often found in shallow waters. They are prized for their smooth surface and vibrant colors.
  2. Scallop Shells: Recognizable by their fan shape and radiating ribs, scallop shells come in various colors, including orange, pink, and purple.
  3. Conch Shells: Known for their spiral shape and sturdy build, conch shells are a favorite among collectors. The lightning whelk, a type of conch, is especially common along the Gulf Coast.
  4. Cockleshells: These heart-shaped shells are usually found in sandy areas. They have distinct ridges and come in a range of colors from white to red.
  5. Auger Shells: Slender and pointed, auger shells are often found buried in the sand. They are named for their resemblance to a drilling tool.

National Seashell Day encourages locals and visitors alike to get out, explore the beaches and collect these natural treasures. Beachcombing along the Gulf Coast offers a relaxing way to enjoy nature and discover the diverse marine life that calls this area home.

Whether a seasoned shell collector or a casual beach goer, National Seashell Day is the perfect occasion to appreciate the beauty and variety of seashells found along the Gulf Coast.
